Looking back - August 2000. The Gardner Street Landfill in the West Roxbury section
of Boston was closed with 400,000 cubic yards of CA/T historic fill. The restoration
of this former municipal trash landfill is adding approximately 100 acres to the
parkland of Boston.
Another August 2000 shot. Site restoration can be seen here with the planting
of trees, shrubs and grass.
November 2000. Here we see the site closer to completion. The visitor parking
lot can clearly be seen at the center of photo. A canoe launching area along the
Charles River (bottom) was built to enhance the park area. To learn more about
canoeing, and other river activities, see the MDC Charles River Reservation website.
November 2000. A different aerial perspective is seen here. Bordering the Gardner
Landfill is West Roxbury High School property including their ball fields. The
school area is visible at the bottom of photo. The new 100 acre landfill adds
to the city of Boston's parkland and provides convenience for the existing school.
It also provides access to the Charles River for everyone. Learn more about the
innovative materials reuse program that has benefitted many communities in the
area.
